Thus, I present A Swede Talks Movies’ The Films I Watched In 2011 Awards! Or ASTMTFIWI2K11A, if you’re into the whole brevity thing. So rather than reflecting strictly on the films released this year, I’d like to reflect on all the films I saw this year. A list like that from me is still a good half year away from meaning anything. I won’t be doing that, because I haven’t seen nearly enough films of 2011 yet. Inspired by nationalist dreams of creating their own pure homelands, Serbs and Croats have destroyed community and now live among destruction and hatred.As the year is approaching its end, it’s customary for bloggers and critics alike to do a top ten list of the best movies of the year. Nationalism offers people an escape from the grim realities of their own lives. Ethnic Nationalism in Serbia and Croatia (01:49) Angry Serbs blame their troubles on western sanctions rather than Slobodan Milosevic. Angry Serbs Blame the West (02:30)Ī bank in Belgrade refuses to open for a mob of people outside demanding their money. Slobodan Milosevic masterminded the war in Croatia as he set out to build a greater Serbia on the ruins of Yugoslavia. Serbia, the most hated nation in Europe, has been economically devastated by the war with Croatia. A reporter asks Serbian soldiers to describe what differentiates Serbs from Croatians. Serbian and Croatian soldiers, neighbors who know each other by name, trade verbal jabs on a CB radio. He surveys the devastation there and comments on the horrible outcomes of ethnic nationalism. Atrocities of Ethnic Nationalism in Vukovar (05:16)Ī reporter traveling through war-torn Croatia passes a United Nations checkpoint into the Serbian enclave of Vukovar. Set against the backdrop of a Croatian propaganda film, a Croatian soldier in Osijek describes his pride in being Croatian and how he feels about Serbians. The Croatian city of Osijek is surrounded on three sides by the Serbs. He is treated as a hero and a celebrity in his hometown. A Croatian Warlord (03:11)Ī Croatian warlord formed his own militia in 1990 when Serbs and Croats were heading toward conflict. The reporter explains why he believes fear, more than hatred, led to the fighting between Croats and Serbs. A Croatian Nationalist (04:20)Ī reporter travels through war-torn Croatia and visits with a Croatian nationalist whose home was destroyed by Serbs. An elderly couple who now lives in a shed describes memories of ethnic cleansing. An Elderly Serbian Couple's Experience (05:02)Ī reporter travels through a Serbian enclave in Croatia and finds villages destroyed and deserted since the fighting began between Serbs and Croats.

In 1991 the museum which memorializes the site was destroyed by Croatian police and soldiers. Jasenovac was a World War II concentration camp run by Croatian fascists put into power by Hitler hundreds of thousands of Serbs, as well as Gypsies and Jews, were murdered there. Jordanian forces camp at a United Nations checkpoint that marks the beginning of a Serbian enclave in Croatia. The Edge of Croatia's War Zone (01:33)Ī reporter enters Croatia's war zone. A reporter hopes his United Nations press pass will enable him to travel freely and report both sides of the conflict in Croatia. Antagonism between Serbs and Croats is at the root of all that has happened since. Minorities in the new Croatia, especially Serbs, felt threatened and civil war broke out. When eastern Europe's Communist regimes began to fall, Croatians held high hopes of being freed from communism, Yugoslavia, and the Serbs. Today, ethnic nationalism has destroyed the Yugoslav identity since going to war with each other, Serbs and Croats no longer travel Tito's road. Tito built Yugoslavia's Highway of Brotherhood and Unity to unite Serbs and Croats.
